Pinkfong, a South Korean entertainment firm, released Baby Shark, a nursery rhyme for children using hand movements, in 2016. The song immediately achieved international fame and became a viral success, with billions of views on YouTube. It has over 13 billion views, making it the first video on YouTube to surpass 10 billion. The video is also the third most liked video with over 40 million likes, after only Despacito and See You Again.
Surprisingly, Baby Shark has approximately 15 million dislikes, making it the second-most hated video on YouTube. The song developed as a campfire song in the twentieth century. Although the song has various versions, Pinkfong’s is the most often used.
The video has received billions of views from people all over the world which surpasses the number of people in the whole world! A trending online challenge known as the Baby Shark Challenge evolved as a result of the video’s popularity. The challenge drew both children and adults to dance and vibe along to the song.
Another fascinating statistic is that 23 of the 42 most disliked videos on YouTube are music videos for children. Despite the large number of dislikes, these videos produce a considerable number of views and engagement, demonstrating the ability of music to grab the attention of young viewers.
Baby by Justin Bieber created a record being the most viewed video on YouTube in 2010, with 425 million views by the end of the year. South Korean musician PSY’s Gangnam Style video set the record in 2012, becoming the first video to receive one billion views on YouTube. Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s See You Again became the most viewed video on YouTube in 2017 surpassing Gangnam Style. One month later, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee beat the record with Despacito, which was later broken by Baby Shark in 2020.
